Frequently Asked Questions

Is it useful to have a consultation before I have my baby?

Going by my own experience, it can be very useful to have a consultation before you have your baby.  There are so many new things you need to learn when your baby is born that knowing which sling fits with your needs and how to use it comfortably can really help during the early weeks.  I have specially designed weighted demonstration dolls (the weight of an average newborn baby) so that you can learn how to use a sling without having your baby in your arms!  Coming to see me before your baby arrives can be useful in two ways: if you are still researching and choosing what might be the best sling for you, I can demonstrate a wide variety of slings.  Once you've narrowed down your choice I can teach you how to use a particular sling / carrier and outline safety recommendations and the physiologically optimal position for you to carry your baby.

In my demonstration set I have different brands of slings and carriers which I can demonstrate for you.  This can help you research and buy a sling that suits your needs.  Because buying a sling is a financial investment, having a demonstration from my demo set can minimise the risk of buying a sling that doesn't work for you and your family.  I own some of the leading brands of stretchy wraps, ring slings, Soft Structured Carriers (SSCs) and a few mei tais.  Whiile stretchy wraps are often similar there are key differences in both price and design which can make some stretchy wraps more suitable for different budgets and different needs.  With ring slings, it's useful to see and try different brands because different shoulder types fit different shoulders better.   Soft structured carriers have various innovative features that can be useful to see in real life.  Because I use woven wraps with my own children, I have an broad range of woven wraps in all different lengths and textile combinations from many of the leading manufacturers.  Feeling and trying different woven wraps can give you a better sense of what size and type of wrap will suit you best.

In terms of price, there are a few options for parents who wish to have a consultation before their baby is born. Two options are a one-to-one specially tailored class or the bump-to-baby package.  Specially tailored classes usually last 1.5 hours (up to 2 hours). I charge 30 euros for 1.5-2 hours, with 5 euros per 30 mins thereafter.  I also offer a discount for a bump-to-baby package, where 50 euros covers two classes.

Is it possible to carry older babies?

Knowing how to carry your baby in a sling from birth can make life with a baby so much easier, fulfulling your needs and your baby's.  A sling is also a valuable tool to use when caring for older babies and young children.  Not only is it a wonderful way of caring for a child when you go about on your daily activities, but being able to carry a toddler makes many activities, like walking and hiking, a pleasurable way of getting out with your family.  It can also make travel much easier, where you carry your child and use a roll-along suitcase, rather than trying to manouevre a suitcase and a buggy.  Most parents are familiar with the stage when toddlers want to walk and then wish to be carried.  During this 'up / down' phase a ring sling can be invaluable.

Ring slings and woven wraps are the most versatile carriers, and can truly be used from birth to toddlerhood and beyond.  There are also many soft structured carriers, wrap conversions and Asian style carriers (such as a mei tai) which are designed to be used for toddlers and older children.

I can teach you how to use a ring sling and a woven carrier with an older baby or toddler.  I also have a various toddler sized mei tais and SSCs in my demo set.  I try to keep up-to-date on what is available in these carriers, so I can help you find something that might suit.
